ABOUT THE AIRPORT:

Like many community airports, Portland International Jetport had its beginnings as a flying fans private field. Today, the facility serves nearly 1.4 million passengers a year, flying on the most modern equipment of most of the major airlines. In the late 1920s, Dr. Clifford "Kip" Strange first created space on his extensive Portland land for his Curtiss Jenny. Before long, there were a couple of grass runways on his land that attracted other flyers.

In 1940, the depression-era Works Progress Administration built Portlands first real terminal, a brick structure that now is the general aviation terminal. During WorldWar II, the airport was closed to most civilian traffic, but was visited by numerous lend-lease aircraft on their way to Canada.
As the jetport has changed over the years, its connection to the past has continued to remain alive and well. In addition to setting in motion the events that gave way to todays modern jetport facility, the Strange family developed a long history with aviation. Daughter Beth became an airline flight attendant and married a Northeast Airlines pilot.

In later years, son Neal maintained a floatplane at his home in Raymond, Maine, and grandson Keith operated a seaplane base in Lincoln, Maine. One other prominent thing that has not changed is the designation of Portland International Jetport as PWM. That harks back to the early days, when airline pilots would follow beacon lights from airport to airport.

The last light before Portland was at Westbrook, 10 miles to the west, so the initials PWM were derived from Portland-Westbrook-Municipal.

ABOUT THE SCENERY:

This is my second New England airport for FS2004. On my other NE airport I stated that I had been having very bad computer problems, so I rushed the readme file while it was operating. If you downloaded Bangor International and had problems Installing it, just follow the general steps from this one. Except for the file names, the steps are the same.

Portland Me was done because I also plan to do her sister city, Portland Or. It's ironic that both facilities sit near a river basically in the same way.

Here are the files in this download: kpwm_v1.zip-The main file, kpwm_scen.zip-The scenery file, ME - Portland Int........FLT and .WX-The startup files, KPWMFLTPLN.txt-The flight plans file, AF2_kpwm.bgl-The AFCAD2 parking and taxiway file, Readme and FILE_ID files and several jpg image files. Below are the installation instructions. Happy flying.

INSTALLATION:

Using the "Use stored folders" switch unzip the main zip file to the hard drive where your flight simulator is stored. If you are reading this file, you have done that already. Now, if you don't have Traffic Tools 2.0 or higher by Lee Swordy, or AFCAD2 also by Lee Swordy, Download them from flightsim.com and install them on your system. If you already have Ttools and AFCAD2 on your system, continue with the next step.

Using the "use stored folders" setting, unzip the scenery zip file to the hard drive where your flight simulator is located.

Check the following folders for the following files:
C:\My Documents\Flight Simulator Files for ME - Portland....... .FLT and ME - Portland...... .WX
C:\FS2004 (or whatever your simulator folder's name is)\Addon Scenery\scenery for AF2_kpwm.bgl
C:\fs2k4_scenery\KPWM\scenery for the .bgl files (This folder was created when you unzipped the scenery zip file)

Cut and paste the contents of the KPWMFLTPLN.txt file into the flight plans text file in Traffic tools. Run the Compile and then run the Decompile.

Start fs2004 and select settings. Go into Scenery Library and add the scenery area in the usual manner. Close FS at this time.

Now re-start FS and thi time select "Select a Flight". Under My Saved Flights, find ME-Portland International Jetport. Double click and you're on your way.

Below are the aircraft I used in this scenery. You might want to download the non-default ones before you start Portland International. OOPS! To late? No matter you can always add them on later.

AIRCRAFT:

Remember my computer problems I spoke of at the top of this readme? Well I used to have a list of the zip files of the aircraft I dowmloaded from flightsim.com. No more. So, now I am afraid you will have to search for them yourself until I can figure out the names of the zips. I can tell you what kind of aircraft I used and you can download similar models.

For the start up flight, I used an Embraer EMB-170 in the US Airways livery. The following are the aircraft I used for the flight plans AI aircraft. The flight plans are listed by AC#'s. When you install the aircraft into FS and enter them into Ttools's aircraft text, your AC# may be diferent.

AC#60 Boeing 737-400 US Airways
AC#123 Embraer EMB-145 American Eagle (American Airlines)
AC#119 Boeing 727-200 United Airlines
AC#122 Douglas DC-9-10 Northwest Airlines
AC#69 Boeing 727-200 Delta Airlines
AC#105 Boeing 737-400 Continental Airlines
AC#74 Boeing 777-300 Fedex
AC#128 Cessna Citation X
AC#129 Cessna Skylane 182R RG (Remember the one in FS2002 that they left out in FS2004)
AC#2 The default Beechcraft King Air 350
AC#44 The default Learjet 45
AC#49 The default Mooney Bravo
AC#40 The default Douglas DC-3 Paint3

All of the non-default aircraft are downloadable from flightsim.com. They are the type that serves Portland.
